This play by Bertolt Brecht (1930) addresses issues related to tradition and social norms. It presents two possible outcomes, reminding us of the importance of exercising our free will.
An epidemic arises and a young man whose mother is ill decides to go with his teacher on an expedition to find a cure with the doctors who are beyond the mountains. In the course of this dangerous journey, the young man is unable to continue the journey because he is weak. However, the tradition of its people dictates that, if one of the elements of the expedition becomes ill, it should be thrown to the precipice in a way that does not compromise the crossing and the purpose of the other members.
